In giant slalom - as in "normal" slalom - the aim is to ski down a slope between several gates in the shortest possible time. The difference in giant slalom is that there are fewer gates than in simple slalom and the distances between the gates are greater. This means that fewer turns are needed for the descent and the skier reaches higher speeds.
