If you want to take part in alpine ski races, you need specially made racing skis. In contrast to conventional race carvers, they are specially designed for professional racing. They should therefore only be skied by experts who are familiar with the handling of these skis.
Competition skis must fulfil special requirements set by the FIS (Fédération International de Ski). These are the prescribed lengths, the side widths under and in front of the binding as well as the radius and the maximum height. As there are different disciplines in ski racing, the skis must also be designed according to the requirements. The abbreviations SL and GS in the ski names refer to the disciplines. SL stands for slalom, one of the oldest competitions in skiing. The distances between the gates are very short, meaning that the skier has to change direction extremely quickly. The strong waist of the skis makes particularly short radii possible. The abbreviation GS stands for Giant Slalom. In this discipline, fewer gates have to be skied around than in slalom, meaning that significantly higher speeds can be achieved. The ski is less waisted so that larger radii can be skied.
